We got a chance to sit down with one of Black Points finest, a prestigious member of the local Regatta Sailing Club and strong believer of family and community. Read what L’ Rando “Rambo” Rolle has to say about his beautiful island that has captivated many sailing visitors sailing throughout the Exuma Cays.
TMY - Katie: Are you from Black Point Exuma, What is your fondest memory growing up in Black Point?
Rambo: “Hi, yes I am from Black point I was born in in Nassau but right after my mom gave birth she took
me back home to Black Point Exuma. My fondest memories of BP is how we lived to help each
other, whether it was cooking for everyone, help with building homes,
regatta - competition of sailing boats. It’s the love in the
community that has made our island so beautiful, were not just a small family, when we were children, it was the entire village. One
big family!”
TMY- Katie: What do you love about Black Point, that visitors are likely to miss out on if not told?
Rambo: “The beautiful beaches and also night
life like going for what we call black crabs (Crabbing), also fishing
on the seaside or like we like to say “fishing on the rocks.” Also,
joining in and being apart of our regatta were they can see sailing through our eyes.
Sailing in the Regatta is a huge part of our lives.”
TMY - Katie: If you could only recommend one thing to see/eat while in town, what would it be?
Rambo: “I would recommend everyone to see Plain Bay Beach
also try the Boil Fish and Johnny Cake for breakfast, Crab and Rice with
Broil Grouper.”
TMY Katie: Tell us about local culture?
- Rambo: Our community loves sailing, But the local culture is all around, ladies making baskets, straw work, platting straw, harvesting top and preparing native dishes and herbs. Also, baking homemade bread!
TMY Katie - What is your favorite food when your at home?
Rambo: “I love boil chicken and white rice and homemade
bread with with the coconut swirl. My mom makes a good coconut swirl
bread.”
TMY Katie: Who is the eldest person in your neighborhood?
Rambo: “The eldest person from my neighborhood is my Grand Aunt her name is Mildred Rolle-Robinson SHE IS 107!”
TMY Katie: WOWWWWWWWW 107!!! I need the secrets from Auntie.
TMY Katie: What is Black Point most known for?
Rambo: “Black point is MOST known for its Regatta and friendly people.”
TMY Katie: Tell us something we don’t know about Black Point?
Rambo: “The people from my home go above and beyond to
make you feel like you are apart of who we are and where we are from, we give you that Genuine
love. We believe in Family and One love.”
TMY Katie: Are there any best kept secret spots?
Rambo: “We have lots of best keep secret spots would love to share it when I see you.😎”
TMY Katie: In your opinion which is the best restaurant to get food in Black Point?
Rambo: “This is a tough one to answer I would say that all
of the restaurants have its own unique features, flavors, and style
so I would let you be the judge of it. But they are all very good
places and great service.”
TMY Katie: Where should we stay when in Black Point?
Rambo: We have a lot of accommodations, if your looking
for peaceful with a beach view which is great for families and couples I
suggest Bread Boy Cottages, Ida Lorraine and Mr. Henry have cottages and if
you want something were you are closer to the community you have
Deshamons and Adderley Scorpio Motel.
TMY- Katie: Where is the best beaches on Black Point?
Rambo: “The best beach on black point is heading south to plain bay there’s another beach on the north side of plain bay with a ocean view.”
TMY Katie: Describe the sunsets in Black Point?
Rambo: “The sunset is beautiful and depending on were you are you can get the best photos just beautiful.”
