Being qualified is extremely important to the benefit of your career growth. Working onboard a luxury yacht or super yacht requires getting qualified for the position, some certifications you won’t be hired without.

Here are some of the basic entry qualifications and certifications required  and what makes these certifications so important for a career onboard:

> ENG1 - Seafarer Medical

MCA Law states that every seafarer must have and ENG1 or ML5 seafarer medical fitness certificate to work at sea. These examinations establish whether you have any medical conditions that could interfere with your responsibilities at sea. This is the first step to working onboard before you obtain your STCW.

> STCW 95 - Basic Safety Training

Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping

It is a requirement for all crew members working in the maritime and yachting industry.  It is super important and a mandatory requirement you won’t be able to land a job without.  Should an unlikely event arise onboard, crew must be able to identify safety hazards and know how to respond in an emergency situation onboard. It is imperative that emergency situations are simulated throughout the course to create real life situations to all students enrolled in the STCW courses.

Departments

All yachts have departments, and it is the same regardless of the yachts size, however, smaller yachts require that some crew positions are doubled. For Example: Deck/Stew

There are four departments:

> Deck - This department includes the bridge and its exterior crew they are responsible for navigation, safety of the vessel, maintenance of the exterior, outdoor guest activities and services.

> Engineering - Safety, Engine Room Operations and to maintain smooth operations of the yacht. It is the heart of the yacht or vessel without it we are just a boat tied to the dock.

> Interior - Interior Guest Services, housekeeping, ensuring the well-being of the guests, interior management and accounting.

> Galley - Galley Maintenance, food preparations, provisioning and stock
